Nasturtiums 8x10 Oshie (raised cloth) style art print

These pretty nasturtium flowers are boldly climbing through different fabric prints in a sunny garden! I made the original piece using an Oshie style technique with puffy, stuffed elements covered in fabric, with embroidery floss vines. Oshie art is a centuries-old Japanese craft, which I got interested in after purchasing a beautiful Oshie piece in Vancouver, BC. :)

Oshie is a unique collage-puzzle of sorts, where the picture is made up of tiny pieces, each individually covered with fabric over a puffy batting inside, then glued back together. Historically scraps of kimono fabric were used.

When I do oshie style art, I create a picture on chipboard, cut out each element, then "upholster" each piece by gluing quilting cotton fabric around it with a cotton batting underneath to make it puffy. Then I reassemble the picture like a puzzle, gluing all the pieces to a backing board. It's fun! I got into it before I knew how to sew very well, and it started me on my path of loving fabrics. :) There is a quilting technique called trapunto which creates raised, 3D effects with areas stuffed with cotton. Maybe I'll try that sometime!
